It's not the new job that's hard, it's everything around it!

It's not the job that's hard, it's everything around it

“It’s not the job that’s hard — it’s everything around it.”
That’s what a newly appointed executive told me recently.
And it stuck with me, because it’s true.
Leaders today aren’t just navigating KPI's. They’re managing ambiguity, legacy systems, evolving expectations, new power dynamics, cultural complexity, and the fast creep of AI into every corner of work.

They’re under pressure to:
- Prove impact quickly
- Build trust without full context
- Lead change before they've fully landed

It’s no surprise that leadership transitions are now some of the most high-stakes moments in a person’s career. Even seasoned leaders can falter if the environment doesn’t allow them to adjust and thrive.

We often assume that successful leaders "just figure it out."

But the truth? Even the best need a runway, a map, a conversation.
Leadership today is a test of speed, empathy, and strategic clarity, often all at once. And the margin for error keeps shrinking.
We need to get better at designing for those early months. Because when leadership fails, it's rarely about capability. It’s about context.
